Position Overview:
The Senior Solutions Architect is a key leadership role is responsible for designing and implementing scalable, innovative technology solutions that address complex business problems across the enterprise. The role will work closely with various teams to interpret business needs, research and recommend technical solutions, and ensure alignment with the State’s broader technological and strategic goals. This position requires expertise in architecture design, collaboration, and thought leadership, focusing on delivering high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective technology solutions for both internal and external stakeholders.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Solution Architecture (35%)
Lead the development of technical solutions to complex, multi-dimensional business problems, utilizing best-in-class technologies and innovation.
Design, prototype, research, and recommend technical solutions to business needs, whether using purchased or custom-developed solutions.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define business, technical, regulatory, and architectural requirements.
Provide leadership and mentorship to team members, ensuring the adoption of industry-standard practices.
Ensure security and compliance by working with the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to implement appropriate application security controls.
Oversee technical documentation, including release notes and specifications, ensuring quality and accuracy.
Work with project managers to provide progress reports and estimates for project deliverables.
Lead and coordinate design, architecture, and code reviews to ensure best practices are followed.
2. Collaboration and Leadership (25%)
Act as a work lead, translating business objectives into functional technical solutions and guiding the implementation process.
Collaborate with OIT architecture staff, CTO teams, and vendors throughout the project lifecycle to ensure effective and efficient solution delivery.
Mentor and coach other solution architects, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of architecture standards, guidelines, and roadmaps.
Actively participate in community outreach and share best practices with both internal and external technology communities.
Make key decisions on resource allocation, vendor selection, and technology integration.
3. Strategy and Innovation (20%)
Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, assessing their potential application within the State’s OIT infrastructure.
Work with organizational leaders to forecast and incorporate new technologies into OIT’s roadmap.
Evaluate new tools, technologies, and services, making recommendations for enterprise-wide adoption.
Assist in strategic technology decisions, aligning technological innovations with OIT’s long-term goals and service delivery needs.
Identify opportunities for technology alignment and lead the transformation of business processes to leverage new or emerging technologies.
4. Business Process Optimization & Strategic Planning (20%)
Collaborate with senior management to ensure the effective allocation of OIT resources to meet business needs and achieve strategic objectives.
Evaluate the cost, technology, and licensing requirements of new technologies, ensuring alignment with budget constraints.
Provide thought leadership in technology initiatives, translating technical plans into clear, compelling business value proposals.
Support the development of proposals for grants and funding opportunities that align with OIT projects and strategic goals.
Participate in long-term technology planning and modernization efforts, including vendor negotiations and enterprise agreement management.
Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
Experience:
10+ years of experience in IT, including experience in a technical leadership role.
Proven experience in designing and implementing scalable enterprise technology solutions.
Experience with cloud technologies, data integration, and enterprise architecture frameworks.
Demonstrated expertise in project management, team leadership, and vendor management.
Strong understanding of OIT operations and a comprehensive understanding of the Colorado state government’s IT needs.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in public sector or government technology initiatives.
Familiarity with the Colorado Benefits Management System (CBMS) and other State of Colorado applications.
Knowledge of security standards and best practices, particularly in a state/government context.
Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Google Apps for Government, and Public Safety Communications Networks.
