Position Summary:

  • As an Engineer Design 2, you will work in a fast-paced environment with high expectations, diverse assignments, and collaborating with internal and external customers.
  • In this role you will design industrial tools, dies, gauges, drill & assembly jigs, fixtures, machine attachments and equipment, required for assembly, composite production or experimental use, considering such factors as accessibility, economy, mobility, and performance requirements.
  • This role works closely with manufacturing, operations, vendors, and cross-functional engineering teams to ensure tooling meets quality, cost, schedule, and safety requirements.
  • This role will have the ability to work autonomously and in a team environment, adapt to processes and company policy while providing input or methods of process/design innovation.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop tooling concepts and support equipment for new and existing programs.
  • Design tooling and equipment, including engineering drawings, inspection requirements, and verification plans.
  • Review designs for manufacturability, fit, form, and function.
  • Identify and mitigate safety risks in accordance with company and state/government standards.
  • Make layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of structures.
  • Develop basic data and make preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposals.
  • Interface with internal customers and design review teams to ensure requirements are met.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, operations, and process engineering to support program quality, delivery, and cost objectives.
  • Manage tooling projects, including cost, schedule, procurement, and fabrication.
  • Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
  • Identify design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
  • Support vendors during fabrication and inspect fabricated tooling for drawing compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and proactive problem-solving Safety, Process, and Compliance.
  • Support investigations related to root cause analysis, non-conformances, and process failures.
Basic qualifications:
  • Experience with industry standard design tools including NX CAD & CATIA
  • Knowledge of manufacturing, fabrication processes and machine shop practices
  • Experience with drawing release criteria and related documents for:
    • Completeness, clarity, and dimensional accuracy
    • Correctness of materials and processes
    • Conformity to design/drafting standards (e.g. GD&T), design specifications, and practicability;
    • Economy of fabrication, assembly, and installation.
  • Knowledge and application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018)
  • Knowledge and application of drawing weld symbols
  • Strong organizational skills in managing time, projects, and resources
  • Technical attention to detail
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a DoD SECRET security clearance & special program access
  • Bachelors Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline and a minimum of 2 years relevant engineering experience
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment
  • Experience in engineering, design, and fabrication of special tooling and support equipment
  • Experience in design, fabrication and implementation of tooling used in the manufacture of composite parts
  • Ability to evaluate vendor capabilities for tooling and aerospace part production
  • Experience participating in developments project, establishing tooling SOW and design estimates.
  • Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Experience with stress analysis of simple to complex problems via hand calculations and FEMAP/NASTRAN.
  • Professional Engineering License.
  • Current active DOD Secret clearance with an investigation date/periodic review within the last 5 years.
