Position Summary:
- In this role you will design industrial tools, dies, gauges, drill & assembly jigs, fixtures, machine attachments and equipment, required for assembly, composite production or experimental use, considering such factors as accessibility, economy, mobility, and performance requirements.
- This role works closely with manufacturing, operations, vendors, and cross-functional engineering teams to ensure tooling meets quality, cost, schedule, and safety requirements.
- This position will have the ability to work autonomously and in a team environment, adapt to processes and company policy while providing input or methods of process/design innovation.
- The ideal candidate for this role will enjoy working in a fast-paced environment with high expectations, diverse assignments, and collaborating with internal and external customers.
- Develop tooling concepts and support equipment for new and existing programs.
- Design tooling and equipment, including engineering drawings, inspection requirements, and verification plans.
- Review designs for manufacturability, fit, form, and function.
- Identify and mitigate safety risks in accordance with company and state/government standards.
- Make layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of structures.
- Develop basic data and make preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposals.
- Interface with internal customers and design review teams to ensure requirements are met.
- Coordinate with manufacturing, operations, and process engineering to support program quality, delivery, and cost objectives.
- Manage tooling projects, including cost, schedule, procurement, and fabrication.
- Check completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
- Identify design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommend revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
- Support vendors during fabrication and inspect fabricated tooling for drawing compliance.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and proactive problem-solving Safety, Process, and Compliance.
- Support investigations related to root cause analysis, non-conformances, and process failures.
- Experience with industry standard design tools including NX CAD & CATIA.
- Knowledge of manufacturing, fabrication processes & machine shop practices.
- Experience with drawing release criteria and related documents for:
- Completeness, clarity, and dimensional accuracy
- Correctness of materials and processes
- Conformity to design/drafting standards (e.g. GD&T), design specifications, and practicability;
- Economy of fabrication, assembly, and installation.
- Knowledge and application of GD&T (ASME Y14.5-2018).
- Knowledge and application of drawing weld symbols.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills in managing time, projects, and resources.
- Technical attention to detail.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a DoD SECRET security clearance & special program access.
- Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline.
- Experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment.
- Experience in engineering, design, and fabrication of special tooling and support equipment.
- Experience in design, fabrication and implementation of tooling used in the manufacture of composite parts.
- Ability to evaluate vendor capabilities for tooling and aerospace part production.
- Experience participating in developments project, establishing tooling SOW & design estimates.
- Experience with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Experience with stress analysis of simple to complex problems via hand calculations and FEMAP/NASTRAN.
- Professional Engineering License.
- Current active DOD Secret clearance with an investigation date/periodic review within the last 5 years.
